Lunch time!

Left to right:  Tanya from England, me, Mariola from Spain

There are tons of places to try around school at lunch time depending on how far we want to walk, how adventurous we're feeling, and how much time we have.  On average our break is 1 hour 15 minutes.    Today we found a place with the most unusual menu I've seen so far.  It's down the street and appears to be like most other restaurants.  (It had the best bathroom I've seen - there was even toilet paper!)  Then we looked at the menu.....

That's right - Fried frog, Fried solid intestine with green pepper, Fried cow tongue with red ant, Stir fried cow stomach with ripe tamarind, Cow stomach salad with banana flower.

Mariola was feeling a bit adventurous and tried the Beef with red ant.

If you look at the top of the beef you can see an ant

I ordered Roasted Chicken with Lemon Grass.

There was a lot of flavor but most of that chicken is all bone.  It was hard to eat. I didn't get much meat off those bones.  At least it came with rice and only cost a couple dollars.

You'll find that southeast Asians tend to like bones and cartilage a lot more than the actual meat. If you go to a market, the chicken breasts are the cheapest part of the chicken. Most of my Vietnamese friends here think that only eating meat is boring. Chalk this up to reason #1,000 why us Westerners are heavier than the locals out here.
