You call this driving?!

Driving here appears to be pure insanity.  We get driven around in tuk tuks.

It is basically a carriage pulled by a motorbike.

This video does not do the insanity justice.   I know to some people who've traveled around Asia this is nothing.  Vietnam and places in China are much worse.  (Pay no attention to the talking in the background - we're just going over our homework.)

The roads are a mix of cars, tuk tuks, bicycles, pedestrians, carts pulled by cows, carts pulled by people, an occasional hummer, and tons of motor bikes. Some motor bikes have one person, sometimes one person with a small child, sometimes 2 adults (one usually sitting sideways on the back-not holding on to anything), sometimes 2 adults and 2 children.   Some parents actually put helmets on their children but many are wearing nothing.  I like waving at the kids and taking their pictures.

Driving into oncoming traffic is not uncommon - especially if they're trying to make a turn. Infact it's very common when turning.  The sporadic traffic lights are only obeyed if there are a lot of vehicles coming from the other direction.  Motorbikes pull out into traffic without looking.  The drivers seem to have a good sense of awareness and will slow down if you're crossing or a car/tuk tuk/motorbike is turning.  Believe it or not this 'system' works.    Somehow everyone knows the rules and are able to get around just fine for the most part.  For us westerners it can be a scary - but incredibly entertaining.  I'm sure this will not be my last post on the subject.
